Species Working Groups
The USDA initiated the implementation of the National Animal Identification System in 2004. The NAIS is a cooperative State-Federal-industry program administered by USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).
NAIS Subcommittee
The recommendations developed by the various Species Working Groups are provided to the NAIS Subcommittee which serves under the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Foreign Animal and Poultry Diseases. The Subcommittee is comprised of State and industry stakeholders, with Federal staff providing program resources and administrative support.

NAIS Working Groups

Continued grassroots input is critical to the success of the NAIS. Accordingly, USDA and its State and industry partners have established Species Working Groups and a Brand State Working Group to provide recommendations and input as we move forward with the system.
