NAIS Program Updates

We regularly update this page to provide you the latest policy and program information on NAIS at the Federal level. Contact your State NAIS Administrator for current information about NAIS in your State.
Premises Registration:
As of November 16, 2007, States and Tribes have registered 424,855 premises. Current statistics indicate a substantial increase in new premises registrations. Since the beginning of the year, Iowa, for example, has registered over 8,800 additional premises, which represents an increase of 43.8 percent. Other States showing substantial increases include Indiana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas.
Animal Identification
The USDA has announced contracts with three manufacturers to produce 1.5 million radio frequency identification ear tags that are compliant with NAIS standards. The combined cost of the contracts is $1.7 million. The ear tags will be used specifically for USDA state-federal cooperative disease control and eradication efforts, such as bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis and will be distributed in geographic areas which are determined to be of increased risk for disease outbreak or spread. Full details are included on the APHIS Web site.
Business Plan

APHIS continues to finalize the Business Plan to Advance Animal Disease Traceability, which recommends strategies and actions to harmonize existing animal health, marketing, and identification systems to improve U.S. infrastructure for animal disease traceability.

Before the end of the year, USDA intends to release a version of the report which outlines areas with actions where the advancement in traceability offers the greatest return on the invested resources. For a preview of the Business Plan's themes and strategies, we encourage you to read the "Advancing Animal Disease Traceability Overview and Synopsis" (PDF; 910KB) document.

As always, USDA wants to support you as you talk to producers in your State about the NAIS program's status. We encourage you to talk about traceability to your constituents and share the overview document. In light of recent disease outbreaks in the UK and even within the U.S., it is important to communicate the need for an advanced traceability system that will secure the livelihood of producers throughout the country.
