Animal Identification

Other Officially Recognized Numbering Systems

In addition to the animal identification number (AIN) system, there are currently several other official numbering systems and methods of identifying individual animals listed in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) (PDF; 90KB). Over time, however, the AIN will become the standard national numbering system used for unique individual animal identification for certain species and/or methods of identification.

Animals currently identified through official Federal animal disease programs like the National Scrapie Eradication Program do not need to be reidentified with an AIN.
